Upwork Service Fee: How It Works in 2024
Upwork simplified its fee structure in May 2023, moving to a flat 10% service fee on all freelancer earnings. Previously, the fee was tiered (20% for first $500, 10% up to $10,000, 5% above $10,000 with each client). The flat 10% applies regardless of your lifetime billings with a client.
What the 10% Fee Covers
Upwork's service fee covers: payment processing and protection, dispute resolution, Upwork's matching algorithm access, and the Trust & Safety guarantees. The fee is deducted automatically from each payment before it hits your Upwork balance.
How to Price Your Work on Upwork
Always price your Upwork bids with the 10% fee in mind. If your minimum acceptable rate is $50/hour, bid $56/hour ($56 × 0.90 = $50.40 net). A common formula: Desired Rate / 0.90 = Bid Rate.
Upwork vs Fiverr vs Freelancer Fees
Upwork: 10% flat. Fiverr: 20% flat. Freelancer.com: 10% or $5 (whichever is greater). Toptal: no freelancer fee (client pays a premium). For high-value contracts, Upwork's 10% is competitive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — in May 2023 Upwork replaced the sliding scale (20%/10%/5%) with a flat 10% fee on all earnings from all clients. This simplified billing but hurt high-volume freelancers who previously paid only 5% on earnings over $10,000 with long-term clients.
Yes — clients pay a 5% payment processing fee on top of what they pay freelancers. So if you earn $1,000, the client actually paid $1,050 and you netted $900 after Upwork's 10%. The combined platform take is about 14-15% of the total transaction value.
Upwork offers: ACH direct deposit (free, 1-3 days), PayPal (free, instant to PayPal), Payoneer (free, same day), wire transfer ($30 fee), and Instant Pay via debit card (2% fee). For most freelancers outside the US, Payoneer is the most practical option with no fee.
Connects are credits used to submit proposals. Freelancers get 10 free Connects per month; additional ones cost $0.15 each. Most job proposals cost 6-16 Connects. This is separate from the service fee — you pay Connects to apply, then pay 10% on earnings if hired. Unused Connects roll over for up to 12 months.
