How Stripe Fees Work
Stripe charges a per-transaction fee on every successful payment. For US domestic cards the standard rate is 2.9% + $0.30. The fixed component ($0.30) makes small transactions disproportionately expensive — a $1 sale costs $0.33 in fees (33%), while a $100 sale costs $3.20 (3.2%).
Stripe Fee Rates (2024)
US domestic cards: 2.9% + $0.30
UK/EU cards: 1.4% + £0.20 (Stripe UK)
International cards: 3.9% + $0.30
ACH Direct Debit: 0.8%, capped at $5.00
Manually entered cards: +0.5% (card not present)
Stripe Radar (advanced): +0.07% per transaction
How to Pass Stripe Fees to Customers
To receive exactly $100 when charging a US card, you need to charge: ($100 + $0.30) / (1 − 0.029) = $103.30. This formula ensures the fee comes out of the gross charge, not your payout. Note: in some countries (EU, UK) it's illegal to surcharge customers specifically for card fees — check local regulations.
Stripe vs Competitors
PayPal charges 3.49% + $0.49 for standard transactions — higher than Stripe. Square charges 2.6% + $0.10 for in-person and 2.9% + $0.30 online. Stripe's main advantage is developer flexibility and global reach (46+ countries).
Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply the invoice amount by 0.029, add $0.30. That's the fee. To work backwards (how much to invoice to net a specific amount): (desired amount + $0.30) / 0.971. Example: to net $500, charge ($500 + $0.30) / 0.971 = $515.24.
Stripe does not charge a fee on the refunded amount, but the original transaction fee is not returned. If you process a $100 charge ($3.20 fee) and then fully refund it, you lose $3.20. For partial refunds, the fee is proportional to the amount refunded.
When a card from outside your country is used, Stripe adds a 1.5% international card fee on top of the base rate. So US merchants processing a European card pay 2.9% + 1.5% + $0.30 = 4.4% + $0.30. Currency conversion adds another 1% if Stripe converts the currency.
No — Stripe's standard plan has no monthly fee or setup cost. You only pay per transaction. Stripe charges extra for some add-ons: Radar for Fraud Teams ($0.07/transaction), Stripe Tax ($0.50/transaction where tax is calculated), Stripe Billing (0.5% of recurring revenue), and custom invoicing.
