Canada's consumption tax system has two layers: the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) at 5%, and provincial sales taxes that vary by province. Most provinces have harmonised with the federal tax into a single Harmonised Sales Tax (HST) — but Quebec and some western provinces keep separate systems.

How to Add and Remove GST/HST

Add tax: Price inc. tax = Net price × (1 + rate)

Remove tax: Net price = Price inc. tax ÷ (1 + rate)

Ontario HST 13%: $100 net → $113 inc. | $113 inc. → $100 net ($13 tax)

GST/HST Registration Threshold

Most Canadian businesses must register for GST/HST once their taxable supplies exceed $30,000 in any single calendar quarter or in four consecutive quarters. Small suppliers under this threshold may register voluntarily to claim input tax credits (ITCs) on purchases.

Input Tax Credits (ITCs)

Registered businesses can recover the GST/HST they paid on business purchases and expenses by claiming ITCs on their GST/HST return. This means the tax is effectively only paid by the final consumer — not by businesses in the supply chain.
