Canadian Sales Tax Rates by Province (2024)
Canada has three types of sales tax: GST (Goods and Services Tax — federal), PST (Provincial Sales Tax), and HST (Harmonized Sales Tax — a combined federal/provincial rate). The type and rate depends entirely on which province the sale takes place in.

Frequently Asked Questions
GST (5%) is the federal Goods and Services Tax collected by the CRA across all provinces. PST is a separate provincial sales tax (varies by province — 6% Saskatchewan, 7% BC and Manitoba, 9.975% Quebec). HST is a harmonized combination of GST + provincial tax collected as one rate in Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and PEI (all 15%). Alberta, the territories, and certain situations have GST only.
Quebec has GST (5%) plus QST (Quebec Sales Tax) at 9.975%, for a total of 14.975%. Unlike HST provinces, Quebec administers QST separately through Revenu Québec — so Quebec businesses file two separate sales tax returns (one federal to CRA, one provincial to Revenu Québec).
Businesses must register for GST/HST once taxable supplies exceed CAD $30,000 in any single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters. This is the 'small supplier' threshold. Below $30,000 you can still register voluntarily to claim input tax credits on business purchases.
Private sales of used goods between individuals are generally not subject to GST/HST. However, if a business (registered for GST/HST) sells used goods, GST/HST applies. Used vehicles sold through dealerships are taxed; private car sales between individuals are not subject to GST but may be subject to provincial transfer tax.
