How Much Should You Tip?
Tipping conventions vary by country, service type, and situation. In the United States, tips are a major part of service workers' income and are nearly expected at restaurants, salons, and similar services.

Should You Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically correct — the server didn't provide the tax. In practice, the difference is small (usually under $1 on most restaurant bills), and many people simply tip on the total shown on the receipt.
Tipping Outside the US
Tipping culture varies widely: in Japan, tipping is considered rude. In much of Europe, rounding up the bill or leaving loose change is standard. In Australia and New Zealand, service is included in wages and tipping is optional. Always research local customs before traveling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. Example: 10% of $64 = $6.40, doubled = $12.80 for a 20% tip. Your total would be $64 + $12.80 = $76.80.
The etiquette is to tip on the full pre-discount amount. The server provided the same level of service regardless of your coupon, and their tip income shouldn't be reduced because you used a discount.
Traditionally no — fast food counter service was not a tipped profession. With digital tip screens appearing everywhere, there's social pressure, but it remains optional at quick-service or counter-service restaurants where no table service is provided.
For uneven splits, calculate each person's food subtotal separately, apply the same tip percentage to each subtotal, then add tax. Many restaurant POS systems can do separate checks — just ask before the meal ends.
