Text Case Formats Explained
Different contexts demand different text cases. Programming, writing, URLs, and databases each have conventions about how to format multi-word identifiers. Here's a quick reference:
Case
Example
Common Use
UPPERCASE
HELLO WORLD
Constants, headings, acronyms
lowercase
hello world
General text, email addresses, URL paths
Title Case
Hello World
Headings, book titles, proper nouns
Sentence case
Hello world
Normal prose, UI labels, descriptions
camelCase
helloWorld
JavaScript variables, JSON keys, method names
PascalCase
HelloWorld
Class names, React components, TypeScript types
snake_case
hello_world
Python variables, database columns, Linux filenames
kebab-case
hello-world
CSS classes, HTML attributes, URL slugs, npm packages
Which Case Should You Use?
Writing an article or document: Title Case for headings, Sentence case for body text
JavaScript / TypeScript: camelCase for variables and functions, PascalCase for classes and React components, SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE for constants
Python: snake_case for variables and functions, PascalCase for classes, UPPER_CASE for constants
CSS: kebab-case for class names and custom properties
URLs and slugs: kebab-case (never spaces — they become %20 or +)
Database tables and columns: snake_case in PostgreSQL, MySQL; PascalCase in some ORM conventions
Frequently Asked Questions
Both remove spaces and capitalize the start of each word — but camelCase keeps the first word all lowercase (helloWorld) while PascalCase capitalizes every word including the first (HelloWorld). JavaScript uses camelCase for most identifiers; class names use PascalCase.
Python's official style guide (PEP 8) recommends snake_case for variables, functions, and module names, and PascalCase for class names. The choice is partly historical and partly because Python's creator, Guido van Rossum, established these conventions early, and the community has followed them ever since.
Basic accented characters (é, ü, ñ, etc.) are passed through, but the word-splitting for camelCase and snake_case uses spaces, hyphens, and underscores. Full Unicode case mapping (Turkish dotless i, German sharp s) depends on your browser's locale settings.
It's snake_case written in all capitals — LIKE_THIS. It's the conventional format for constants in many languages: MAX_RETRY_COUNT, API_BASE_URL, DEFAULT_TIMEOUT. This converter's UPPERCASE mode plus your own underscores gets you there, or you can start with snake_case output and convert to UPPERCASE.
