UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module) are small tags you add to a URL to tell Google Analytics exactly where your traffic is coming from. Without them, GA4 groups everything as "Direct" or misattributes it — leaving you guessing which ads, emails, or posts actually drive conversions.
The 5 UTM Parameters Explained
| Parameter | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where traffic comes from | facebook, newsletter, google |
| utm_medium | Marketing channel | cpc, email, social, organic |
| utm_campaign | Specific campaign name | black-friday-2024 |
| utm_content | Ad/link variant (optional) | banner-v2, cta-button |
| utm_term | Paid keyword (optional) | shopify+store |
UTM URL Example
https://yourstore.com/sale?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=black-friday-2024&utm_content=banner-v2
UTM Best Practices
- Always use lowercase — GA4 is case-sensitive. "Facebook" and "facebook" appear as separate sources.
- Use hyphens, not spaces — spaces become %20 and look messy. Use black-friday not black friday.
- Be consistent — decide your naming convention once and stick to it across all campaigns.
- Never use UTMs on internal links — tagging internal links resets the session source, corrupting your data.
- Document your taxonomy — keep a shared spreadsheet of approved source/medium/campaign values.
Where to See UTM Data in GA4
In GA4, go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic Acquisition. Set the primary dimension to "Session source / medium" or "Session campaign" to see your UTM-tagged traffic broken down by conversions, revenue and engagement.
