Churn is the silent killer of SaaS businesses. A 5% monthly churn rate sounds small — but it means you lose 46% of your customers every year, and must replace nearly half your revenue just to stay flat. Understanding and reducing churn is the highest-leverage growth lever in subscription businesses.
Customer Churn vs Revenue Churn
Customer Churn Rate:
Churn = Customers lost in period ÷ Customers at start of period
Revenue Churn Rate (MRR Churn):
MRR Churn = MRR lost from cancellations ÷ MRR at start of period
Revenue churn is often more important than customer churn. If your high-value customers stay and low-value ones leave, your revenue churn will be much lower than your customer churn — a healthy sign. The reverse is a red flag: losing big accounts while retaining small ones.
Monthly vs Annual Churn — The Compounding Effect
| Monthly churn | Annual churn (approx.) | Customers retained from 1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| 1% | 11.4% | 886 |
| 2% | 21.5% | 785 |
| 3% | 30.6% | 694 |
| 5% | 46.0% | 540 |
| 10% | 71.8% | 282 |
What Is a Good SaaS Churn Rate?
- Below 1%/month (12%/year): Best-in-class. Common in B2B SaaS with sticky, high-ACV products.
- 1–2%/month: Healthy. Manageable with moderate growth.
- 2–5%/month: Concerning. Requires investigation — likely an onboarding or product-fit issue.
- Above 5%/month: Critical. The business cannot sustain itself unless growth radically outpaces churn.
Consumer SaaS typically has higher churn (3–8%/month) than B2B SaaS (0.5–2%/month) due to lower switching costs and price sensitivity.
The Most Effective Ways to Reduce Churn
- Fix onboarding: Most churn happens in the first 30 days. Users who do not reach the "aha moment" cancel. Map the activation path and remove friction ruthlessly.
- Proactive customer success: Reach out to accounts showing declining usage before they cancel. A single check-in email at the right moment can save 10–20% of at-risk accounts.
- Annual plans: Offering an annual option (with a discount) converts monthly churn risk into a retention commitment. Many SaaS companies see 2–3× lower churn on annual plans.
- Exit surveys: Ask every cancelling customer why they left. Even 20% response rates surface patterns you cannot find any other way.
- Dunning management: Involuntary churn (failed payments) accounts for 20–40% of total churn in many SaaS products. Automated retry logic and dunning emails recapture most of it.
