How to Generate Random Numbers — Methods, Uses and Free Tool

Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

Generate random numbers in any range with our free Random Number Generator — integers, decimals, or unique sets.

True randomness is harder to achieve than it sounds. Computers are deterministic machines — given the same starting state, they always produce the same output. Generating genuinely unpredictable numbers requires either a carefully designed algorithm with a well-chosen seed, or measurements from a physical process that is inherently unpredictable.

Pseudo-Random vs. True Random

TypeHow It WorksGood ForNot For
Pseudo-random (PRNG)Mathematical algorithm seeded from the clock or OSGames, simulations, sampling, picking winnersCryptography, gambling systems
Cryptographically secure (CSPRNG)OS entropy pool — harder to predictPasswords, tokens, encryption keys—
True random (TRNG)Physical noise: atmospheric, thermal, radioactive decayScientific research, certified lotteriesSpeed-sensitive applications

Our generator uses the browser's Math.random() — a PRNG producing a uniform distribution. For picking raffle winners, game decisions, A/B group assignment, or random sampling, it is practically indistinguishable from true random.

Common Uses for Random Number Generators

  • Picking a winner fairly: Number your entries 1 to N, generate one random number in that range
  • Randomizing order: Who goes first in a game or meeting, random seating assignments
  • Statistical sampling: Select a random subset from a population for a survey or audit
  • Games and simulations: Dice rolls, card draws, random encounter tables
  • A/B testing: Assign users randomly to control or test groups
  • Teaching probability: Run large-sample experiments to show the law of large numbers in action

How to Pick a Fair Winner Step by Step

  1. Number each entry or participant: 1, 2, 3 ... N
  2. Set Min = 1, Max = N in the generator
  3. Generate 1 random number — that participant is the winner
  4. For multiple winners with no repeats, tick the "No duplicates" option and generate the required count

Generating Random Numbers in Code

JavaScript — integer between min and max

Math.floor(Math.random() * (max - min + 1)) + min

Python — integer between min and max

import random; random.randint(min, max)

Python — cryptographically secure

import secrets; secrets.randbelow(max - min + 1) + min
