Whether you are writing a blog post, an essay, a social media caption or a client proposal, knowing your word and character count keeps you within platform limits and content guidelines. A word counter also tells you estimated reading time — a key metric for content creators trying to improve engagement.
Why Word Count Matters by Platform
| Platform / Use | Ideal Length |
|---|---|
| Twitter / X post | 280 characters max |
| Instagram caption | 125 characters (before "more") |
| LinkedIn post | 1,300 characters recommended |
| Blog article (SEO) | 1,500–2,500 words |
| Meta description | 150–160 characters |
| Email subject line | 40–60 characters |
How Reading Time Is Calculated
Average adult reading speed is roughly 200–250 words per minute for on-screen reading. The MetricPane Word Counter uses 200 WPM as the baseline — slightly conservative to account for skimming code blocks, tables and lists.
Example: a 1,500-word article ÷ 200 WPM = 7.5 minutes. Medium and Substack round this to the nearest minute and show it as "8 min read".
Flesch Reading Ease Score
The Flesch score measures how easy a piece of text is to read, from 0 (very difficult) to 100 (very easy). It uses sentence length and syllable count per word. Target scores by content type:
- 60–70 — Plain English, ideal for blog posts and marketing copy
- 50–60 — Standard level, fine for professional emails
- 30–50 — Academic and technical writing
- Below 30 — Very difficult, legal documents
Keyword Density — What Is It?
Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword appears relative to total word count. For SEO, aim for 1–2%. Higher than 3% risks looking spammy to search engines; lower than 0.5% may not send a strong enough signal.
The MetricPane Word Counter highlights the top 10 keywords by frequency — useful for checking that your target keyword appears at the right density before publishing.
