In everyday conversation, your age is simply the number of complete years since you were born. But when you need the exact figure — for a visa application, medical screening, legal document, or pension calculation — you need years, months, and remaining days. And that calculation is trickier than it seems.
Why You Cannot Just Divide Total Days by 365
Months have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. Leap years add one extra day every four years (with century exceptions). Dividing by 365 or 365.25 gives an approximate decimal age, not a precise years-months-days breakdown.
Dividing 9,131 days by 365 gives 25.01 years. But the actual age could be exactly 25 years 0 months 1 day — or 24 years 11 months 28 days, depending on the specific dates involved.
The Correct Method: Calendar Subtraction
- Subtract the birth year from the current year to get a raw year count
- Subtract the birth month from the current month
- Subtract the birth day from the current day
- If the day result is negative, borrow one month and add that month's actual day count
- If the month result is negative, borrow one year and add 12 months
Example: Born March 15, 1998 — age as of October 28, 2026
Raw: 2026 - 1998 = 28 years, October - March = 7 months, 28 - 15 = 13 days
Age: 28 years, 7 months, 13 days
