Australia's Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a broad-based 10% tax on most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia. It was introduced on 1 July 2000 and is administered by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
Add and Remove GST Formulas
Add GST (net → gross):
GST-inclusive price = Net price × 1.10
Remove GST (gross → net):
Net price = GST-inclusive price ÷ 1.10
GST amount = GST-inclusive price ÷ 11
Example: $220 inc. GST → net = $220 ÷ 1.10 = $200 | GST = $220 ÷ 11 = $20
GST-Free vs Exempt Supplies
| GST-free (0%) | Input-taxed (GST on purchases not claimable) |
|---|---|
| Basic food (fresh produce, bread, meat) | Financial services (bank fees, insurance premiums) |
| Health services (GP visits, hospital stays) | Residential rent |
| Education (school fees, TAFE, university) | Selling a residential property |
| Exports of goods and services |
GST Registration Threshold
You must register for GST once your business turnover reaches or exceeds $75,000/year ($150,000 for non-profit organisations). Taxis, limousines and ride-sharing drivers must register regardless of turnover. Once registered, you collect GST from customers and claim GST credits (input tax credits) on your business purchases, remitting the difference to the ATO via your Business Activity Statement (BAS).
