A 1099-NEC (or 1099-MISC) means you were paid as an independent contractor — the payer did not withhold any taxes. That means you are responsible for both your own income tax and the entire Social Security and Medicare contribution (self-employment tax). Understanding what you owe before April 15 is critical.

What Is Self-Employment (SE) Tax?

When you work as an employee, Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) are split between you and your employer — you each pay half. As a self-employed person, you pay both halves: 15.3% on net self-employment income up to the Social Security wage base ($168,600 for 2024), then 2.9% above that.

SE tax = Net SE income × 0.9235 × 0.153

The 0.9235 factor accounts for the employer-half deduction. Net SE income = gross 1099 income − business expenses.

Your Total Tax Bill: SE Tax + Income Tax

Net 1099 incomeSE tax (~14.1%)Fed income tax (single, ~2024)Total owed
$30,000$4,239~$1,700~$5,939
$60,000$8,478~$6,400~$14,878
$100,000$14,130~$15,700~$29,830

A common rule of thumb: set aside 25–30% of every freelance payment for taxes. Higher earners or those in high-tax states should save 35%.

Key Deductions for 1099 Workers

  • Half of SE tax: Deduct 50% of your SE tax from gross income before calculating income tax. Worth ~$2,100 at $30K income.
  • Home office: If you use a dedicated space for work, deduct the pro-rated portion of rent/mortgage, utilities and internet. Use the simplified method ($5/sq ft, up to 300 sq ft) or actual expense method.
  • Equipment & software: Laptop, monitor, design tools, subscriptions — 100% deductible if used for business.
  • Health insurance premiums: Self-employed individuals can deduct 100% of health insurance premiums paid for themselves and family.
  • Retirement contributions: SEP-IRA allows up to 25% of net SE income (max $69,000 for 2024) — a powerful way to reduce taxable income.
  • Professional services: Accountant, attorney, business coaching fees are fully deductible.

Quarterly Estimated Taxes

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax for the year, you must pay quarterly estimated taxes or face underpayment penalties. The 2024 deadlines are April 15, June 17, September 16, and January 15, 2025.

The safe harbor rule: pay either 100% of last year's tax bill (110% if AGI exceeded $150K) or 90% of this year's expected tax, whichever is smaller. Doing so avoids penalties even if you end up owing more in April.
